In the Chinese language Ne'Qwa means "hand painting on the inside of glass."
This unique art form originated in China several hundred years ago when the artists began reverse painting on the inside of glass snuff bottles collected by emperors and art connoisseurs. These miniature works of art became highly sought after possessions.
Today, Ne'Qwa Art keeps this rare art form alive by assembling highly skilled artisans at their studio in China, who meticulously reproduce priceless art from prominent North American and English artists.
Special brushes are handmade according to the various glass shapes and the detail of the art design. The glass is mouth blown from the highest grade of glass tubing, leaving a small opening into which the painter can insert the brush. Specially trained and skilled artists use a combination of ink and paint, including acrylic and metallic mediums, water colors, and oils. Opposite from traditional painting, the reverse painting process begins with the foreground and finishes with the background. The inside glass surface is first etched, a process that
ensures the proper adhesion of the paint to the glass. This requirement makes it
extremely difficult for the brush tip to be seen inside the glass. The artist then outlines the main subject matter using traditional Chinese black ink and a brush as fine as a single hair. A steadiness of hand and the careful manipulation of every stroke is crucial in this unforgiving medium. The outlines are then shaded so that when color is later applied the image will bring to life all the dimension and texture of the original artwork. Finally, color is applied. Each color is painted separately and must dry completely before a second color may be added. Colors are then blended and shaded to give the image even greater depth and texture. From outlining, to shading and color application, all the work is painstakingly done in free hand. Depending on the colors used, and the complexity of the design, a single creation can take from several hours to several days to complete.
Each Ne'Qwa Art creation is signed by the artist and every piece of glass is etched with the Ne'Qwa art logo. An artist‘s signature and the Ne'Qwa art logo authenticates every piece.
